BATON ROUGE – The state’s four bowl teams – Grambling, UL Lafayette, Louisiana Tech and LSU – led the list of special awards handed out on the annual Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana College Football team .

The LSWA team is selected by a panel of LSWA members based on nominations from the sports information and communications directors of the state’s football player schools. The media relations representative from each school could vote, but could not vote for nominees from their own schools.

Broderick Fobbs, who led Grambling to the SWAC championship and the Celebration Bowl, was named the Coach of the Year, while Louisiana Tech quarterback Ryan Higgins was named the state’s Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to the Armed Forces Bowl. Linebacker Kendall Beckwith of LSU, which plays Saturday in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl, was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

The Freshman of the Year honor went to UL Lafayette defensive lineman Joe Dillon. The Cajuns played in the New Orleans Bowl this year. The Newcomer of the Year award for first-year Louisiana non-freshman was quarterback James Tabary of McNeese State.

Fobbs took home his third straight SWAC Coach of the Year award after leading the Tigers to a second-straight unblemished record in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Entering December play, Fobbs and Grambling State was the only team in the FCS with a top-five scoring offense and defense.

Beckwith was a finalist for the Butkus Award, earning second team All-America honors. He led LSU in tackles (91) and was ranked second in the league in tackles per game (9.1). He had double-figure tackles in four games including 16 against Alabama and 15 versus Southern Miss.

For the Cajuns’ Dillon, his freshman season play earned him freshman All-America honors from USA Today after posting 49 tackles, including 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. He had a season high of 10 at New Mexico State and 2.5 TFLs and 2.0 sacks in the game at Tulane.

Tabary, who played at Arkansas State before transferring to McNeese, was named the Southland Conference’s Newcomer of the Year after setting single-season school records for most passing yards (3,036), pass attempts (415) and completions (249). He posted four 300-yard passing contests.

2015 LSWA All-Louisiana College Football Team

By Kent Lowe, For the LSWA

The three state teams that went to either post-season bowls or playoffs shared the top awards on the 2015 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana college football squad announced this weekend.

LSU's record-setting sophomore running back Leonard Fournette was named the state's top offensive player, while Wallace Scott of Southland champion and playoff team McNeese State was chosen the defensive POY. Louisiana Tech quarterback Jeff Driskel, who led the Bulldogs to the New Orleans Bowl, was the Newcomer of the Year for first-year non-freshman Louisiana players, while LSU's Arden Key was voted the state's top freshman player.

Matt Viator, who recently became the head coach at ULM, was honored as the state's top coach for his efforts this past season with the playoff bound Cowboys.

The team was selected by a panel of LSWA members based on nominations supplied by the football media relations directors of the various schools in the state. Media relations/sports information directors could not vote for their players, but other LSWA voters could cast ballots for anyone on the ballot.

All voting was done based on the conclusion of the regular season and did not include stats accumulated in post-season bowl or playoff contests.

Fournette, from New Orleans, rushed for a school mark of 1,741 in the 11 regular season games and approached 2,000 yards after LSU win in the Texas Bowl. He was named first-team All-SEC and first-team All-America after rushing for 200 yards in 3 straight games and had 100 or more yards in eight games. He was named a Doak Walker Award finalist.

Scott from Weyanoke, Louisiana, was the Southland Defensive POY and a second team All-American selection. He is the school record holder with two fumble returns for touchdowns and 142 fumble return yards on the season to go with 58 total tackles, two sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss as a defensive back.

In addition to state newcomer, Driskel, the Florida transfer to Louisiana Tech, earned Conference USA Newcomer honors as he guided the Bulldogs offense to a school record 10 consecutive games of 400-plus yards. He completed 255-of-412 passes for 3,575 yards and 24 touchdowns. He rushed for over 400 yards as well with five more scores. He ranked 13th nationally in yards per completion at 14.02.

Key, a defensive end for the Tigers from Atlanta, Georgia, took over as starter three games into the season. He finished with 6.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks with 9 quarterback hurries as he earned Freshman All-SEC and Freshman All-America honors.

Viator wrapped up his tenure as McNeese coach with a perfect regular season of 10-0, just the fifth undefeated and untied season in school history and the second under his watch. He was named the SLC Coach of the Year for a third time and became the conference's all-time winner in league triumphs at 54 and tied Bobby Keasler for all-time wins at 78. Viator led the Cowboys to their 14th SLC title and the fourth in his tenure.

Joining Fournette (RB) and Driskel (QB) on the state's first team offense were offensive linemen Vadal Alexander and Ethan Pocic of LSU, Darrel Brown of Louisiana Tech, Quentin Marsh of McNeese and Anthony Mosley of Southern. The other running back was Kenneth Dixon of Louisiana Tech with Jamal Robinson of UL-Lafayette and Trent Taylor Louisiana Tech chose at wide receiver. The state's tight end selection was Montrell Jones of Southern.

Joining Scott on the first team defense were linemen Vernon Butler of Louisiana Tech, Isaiah Golden of McNeese, Lewis Neal of LSU and Tanzel Smart of Tulane. The three linebackers were Deion Jones of LSU, Hunter Kissinger of ULM and Nico Marley of Tulane, while the other three members of the defensive backfield selected included Jamal Adams and Tre'Davious White of LSU, and, Harlan Miller of Southeastern.

The voters selected on the first team Chris Moore of Northwestern State at place kicker, Jean Breaux of McNeese as punter and Willie Quinn of Southern as the return specialist.

On the combined first and second teams with the few honorable mention selections, LSU had 11 total players selected, Louisiana Tech 10 and McNeese 7. Four other schools – Southern, Grambling, UL-Lafayette and Southeastern – had four selections each. -- By Kent Lowe, written for the Louisiana Sports Writers Association

2014 LSWA All-Louisiana College Football Team

By Kent Lowe, For the LSWA

BATON ROUGE – University of Louisiana at Lafayette running back Elijah McGuire and defensive lineman Christian Ringo captured the two top honors on the 2014 All-Louisiana college football team announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette and Louisiana Tech quarterback Cody Sokol captured awards for first-year players and Grambling State coach Broderick Fobbs was honored for his turnaround of the Tiger program.

The team, traditionally released on Christmas Day, is built off nominations from the media relations directors at the football playing schools in the state. From there, a panel of LSWA members makes their selections with those nominating unable to vote for athletes from their own schools. This year, a total of 33 ballots from all part of the state were turned in for the final vote.

All statistics are based on the final regular season totals of the teams and do not include any post-season or bowl contests.

McGuire earned Offensive Player of the Year honors to go with being named the Sun Belt POY after rushing for 1,165 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns. He posted the fourth most rushing yards in a single season at UL-Lafayette and the sophomore from Houma was also the team's leading receiver with 40 catches for another 414 yards and two touchdowns. He led the SBC and was No. 19 in the country in all-purpose yards at 1,695. He rushed for over 100 yards five times with a best of 265 versus Arkansas State.

The Defensive Player of the Year, Ringo had 35 solo tackles with a strong 19.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks that earned him first-team All-SBC honors. He was ranked seventh in the nation in tackles for loss and ranked 12th in D1 in sacks. He recovered two fumbles for the Cajuns including a 41-yard recovery for a touchdown at Texas State.

The highly regarded Fournette of LSU earned Freshman of the Year honors after rushing for 891 yards and eight scores. He rushed for 100 or more yards four times including a career-best 146 yards and a touchdown in the win over Texas A&M in the regular-season finale. Fournette and the Tigers will play Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl on Tuesday.

Sokol, a senior playing his first year at a Louisiana four-year school (Louisiana Tech), earned state Newcomer of the Year honors adding to his Conference USA Newcomer honors. Sokol, who will lead the Bulldogs in the Heart of Dallas bowl on Saturday, was ranked 11th in the nation in passing touchdowns with 29. Sokol completed 246-of-420 passes for 3,189 yards as Tech scored 40 or more points in six games with the fifth most-improved offense in the nation.

Fobbs was an easy choice of the voters for the state's top coach after taking Grambling from a last-place finish and one win a year ago to competing for a division title. Grambling won seven games against SWAC opponents. Fobbs was the Southwestern Athletic COY and also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award.

Both McGuire and Ringo were named to the first team while Fournette and Sokol were on the second team offense.

On the 25-member first team, LSU had 8 representatives, UL-Lafayette 5, Southeastern 4, Northwestern State 3, Louisiana Tech and ULM 2 each and Tulane 1. Southern, McNeese and Louisiana College had representatives on the second team, while Nicholls had a player listed as honorable mention.
