The Louisiana Sports Writers Association

2018 LSWA All-State Baseball and Softball Teams

Class 5A All-State

Special to the LSWA

Winning a state championship certainly is not a requirement when it comes to Player of the Year honors. Winning titles did not hurt the case of the two players who lead the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A baseball/softball all-state teams.

Ouachita Parish’s Abby Allen and John Curtis’ Cade Beloso, who were named the Most Valuable Players in softball and baseball, respectively, by an LSWA panel.

Just a sophomore, Allen hit .505 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs for the Lions, which rallied from a seven-run deficit against Hahnville to win 10-9. Allen went 2-for-4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored in the victory.

LSU signee Beloso led the Patriots to their second consecutive state championship, hitting .489 with 13 homers and 37 RBIs. He was 2-for-3 in the Division I state title victory over St. Paul’s.

Two New Orleans-area coaches were honored by the LSWA. After just missing in 2017, Jeff Curtis was named the 5A Coach of the Year for baseball after his team that won a second straight Division I title and finished 31-4, including just two losses against Louisiana opponents.

Hahnville’s Jerry Nugent is the 5A Coach of the Year for softball. The Tigers also went 31-4.

Other All-State honorees in baseball include three members from John Curtis, including pitchers Will Ripoll and Ian Landreneau, as well as catcher Jay Curtis. Sulphur placed two on the team in pitcher Chance Stone and outfielder Connor Cooke. Zachary also placed two in outfielder River Town and utility player Rhett Hebert.

The Patriots also placed multiple players make 5A softball squad, as freshman outfielder Sierra Sacco and senior utility player Alyssa Dean were honored. Ouachita had three players honored in Allen, Alyssa Allen and pitcher Allie Ellerbe.

Mt. Carmel had Shelby Wickersham and Jordyn Perkins, on the team. Alexandria’s Caroline Manzer and Briahna Bennett also were named to the team.

Written for the LSWA

The Louisiana Sports Writer Association’s Class 2A All-State baseball and softball squads are heavy on the Cajun flair, with Acadiana area schools claiming three of the top four honors.

The infield consists of Riverside’s Lexi Johnson (.500), Winnfield’s Kassidy Grantadams (.526), Many’s Keely Dubois (.618) and Rosepine’s Haylee Brinlee (.465). The outfielders are St. Thomas Aquinas’ Brilee Broussard (.467), Doyle’s Sydney Taylor (.449) and Calvary Baptist’s Bree Newman (.438).

By Adam Hunsucker

Monroe News-Star

Cedar Creek’s Katelin Cooper suited up for one of the state’s premier high school softball programs, while Landon Leblanc helped return St. John baseball to its past glory.

For their efforts, the duo received the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s top individual honors in Class 1A.

Cooper was selected as the Most Valuable Player after leading Cedar Creek to back-to-back Division IV softball championships. She batted .485 and hit 16 home runs for the Lady Cougars, who captured their third state title in the past five years.

Leblanc’s .415 batting average, 59 RBIs and 14 home runs earned him MVP honors for baseball. Division IV runner-up St. John was the classification’s top overall seed and played for a state championship for the first time since 2003.

Merryville’s David Ford (baseball) and Trey Bennett of Oak Grove (softball) claimed the Coach of the Year honors.

Oak Grove made it a North Louisiana sweep in softball by winning the Class 1A title. Merryville, the 11-seed, capped a Cinderella season for the ages with the Class 1A baseball championship.

Cooper, pitcher Lauren Menzina and outfielder Anna Lar Roberson comprised the Cedar Creek contingent of the Class 1A softball team.

LaSalle’s Taylor Snow, False River’s Carley Parks and Oak Grove’s Kelsie Travis rounded out the pitching staff. Kaylee Clark of South Cameron was voted the catcher.

The infield consisted of Houma Christian’s Bethany Ekiss, Oak Grove’s Carlee Newton, LaSalle’s Keeley Parham and False River’s Jordan Dauthier. Oak Grove’s Amber Sullivan secured an outfield spot next to Cooper and Roberson.

The utility spots went to Central Catholic’s Taylor Picou, Catholic-Pointe Coupee’s Blaire Bizette and Kaitley Fisher, Montgomery’s Carlee Carter and LaSalle’s Ali Long.

Cedar Creek, Class 1A runner-up LaSalle and Oak Grove each landed three players on the team.

Joining Leblanc in the infield were Grand Lake’s Drew Young, Merryville’s Gage Robberson, and Houma Christian’s Gavin Dugas. Catching honors belonged to Dylan Trahan of Houma Christian.

The pitching staff consisted of Grand Lake’s Kade Delcambre, Houma Christian’s Brock Theriot, Ascension Catholic’s Tre Medine and St. John’s Reece Barrilleaux.

Ouachita Christian’s Bryce Wallace, Delta Charter’s Freddie Mango and Ascension Catholic’s Mason Zeringue were voted to the outfield.
